Title: Forensic Scientist - Sheriff's Office

Forensic Scientist (BCSO): Analyzes evidence to identify controlled substances present using scientific testing procedures. Prepares accurate, precise notes and technical reports and testifies as an expert witness regarding scientific conclusions obtained from analysis. Provides technical assistance to members of law enforcement and the criminal justice community. Performs maintenance, calibration and quality control on scientific instruments and performs other duties as assigned. Must possess, or obtain within one year of hire, a South Carolina Class 3 certification.



  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Science or a closely related science field from an accredited college/university. A Master’s Degree is preferred
  • A minimum of twenty (20) hours of coursework in Chemistry. An American Board of Criminalistics Certification preferred
  • Two or more years of experience as a qualified forensic scientist specializing in Drug Identification preferred


All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
